Comfort Foods: One of the Year’s Top Epicurean Trends

Who would have imagined that good old-fashioned mac and cheese, meat loaf and chicken pot pie would have captured so much attention over the past year? Those culinary basics from the Great Depression have adorned the covers of gourmet magazines and have become a popular menu choice at gourmet restaurants and elegant dinner parties alike.

The Center for Culinary Development recently conducted a national online Generational Comfort Food Survey, aligning its findings with the comfort food trend. The survey concluded that “consumers tastes and values are evolving, along with health goals and personal/professional lifestyles.” Among the trends in comfort foods, according to the study, are comfort foods from other cultures and more balanced, guilt-free renditions of traditional recipes.

This popular Chicken Pot Pie recipe, for example, has 52 percent fewer calories and 80 percent less saturated fat than the original version.
