Yoga: A Stress-Reducing Regimen that is Perfect
for Baby Boomers
Feeling
stressed? Yoga may be the perfect fitness option to help you relax,
clear your mind and ease any pain and stiffness from more rigorous
workouts. It’s one of the fastest-growing fitness trends today,
especially among Baby Boomers.
“We Boomers are committed to staying active,
productive, and young at heart,” said Susan Winter Ward, an
internationally recognized yoga instructor. “We’re not interested in
beating up our bodies with pumping iron and pounding them with
jogging anymore. Yoga is the perfect alternative.”
Yoga, meaning “to join or yoke together,” combines
exercise, breathing and meditation, which “brings the body and mind
together in one harmonious experience,” according to the American
Yoga Association. Just 20 minutes a day or 1-2 classes per week can
greatly improve flexibility, balance, energy, strength and
productivity, experts say. Added benefits are stress reduction,
relaxation and inner contentment.
Susan recommends beginning with a gentle and
accessible yoga class. “Find a teacher who inspires you and make
your yoga a priority for one month. After that, it will have become
a practice that you won’t want to miss,” she said.

Susan’s joy is to bring yoga to those who wouldn’t
otherwise think they could do it. “If you’re breathing, you can do
yoga,” says Susan. Her goal is to change the traditional view of
aging from the expectation of decrepitude to one of healthy,
dynamic, and creative in your 50s, 60s and beyond.
