Take the Plunge: Water Aerobics is a
Perfect Workout Option
Water aerobics,
or aqua fitness, isn’t for sissies anymore. Exercising in water
actually has more health benefits, especially in cardiovascular and
muscle conditioning, than most indoor fitness and sports activities.
And, when it comes to weight control, deep-water exercise typically
burns 400-600 calories per hour, almost twice as many calories than
aerobic workouts in the gym.
The buoyancy of water supports up to 80 percent of the body’s
weight; thus there’s less strain on the body’s joints and muscles
during a water aerobic routine. The resistance of the water further
helps tone muscle mass and increases flexibility.
A typical workout lasts 45 minutes to an hour, with a 5-10 minute
period of warm-up and stretching exercises, followed by a
quick-paced aerobics routine – walking, jogging, knee lifts, jumping
jacks and the like -- and a 5-minute cool down. Advanced classes may
add kickboxing or circuit training to the routines. For those with
chronic back, joint or muscle pain, deep-water aerobics, using aqua
belts or other flotation devices, provides even greater resistance
and cushioning.
Most fitness centers, pools and community ed programs offer a
variety of water aerobics classes. A class or two per week can
greatly improve strength, flexibility and balance – and, it’s a fun,
easy way to stay active year-round.
